Various aspects relating to the living environment such as food, clothing, and shelter change with the times. At the Department of Human Life, we study from various viewpoints about the living environment necessary for our lives, and also investigate the factors which will make our lives more abundant and fulfilling. In recent times, there have been significant changes in the earth’s environment. For this reason, it is essential that we seek to create balance and harmony in the earth’s ecosystem. For this, we need “symbiosis,” the keyword of the 21st century. The Department of Human Life will help the students to study the way toward symbiosis within the living environment and the scientific ecosystem, and to create the kind of lifestyle that the times demand. We will seek to nurture talented individuals who will lead society in that direction. The academic domain of this department covers a wide array of fields, and provides the students with ample opportunities after graduation. Indeed, it may be said that it is a department full of possibilities.

■Clothing Composition Training 1

A flexible curriculum that allows students to pursue their individual aims

At the Department of Human Life, you can gain knowledge and skills that can help you to play an active role in the real world. Such knowledge and skills relate to clothing, food, house environment, family relations, life management, consumption, life engineering, life information, and the natural environment as broadly understood. Modern society is confronted by various problems. These include: a declining birthrate, an aging population, destruction of the living environment, and the issue of social welfare. Our flexible curriculum encourages each student to pursue a field that she is really interested in consonant with her own individual personality, and which also meets various social needs. Furthermore, with this excellent system, each student can take up the challenge of obtaining various qualifications, in anticipation of the fact that much will be expected of her after graduation. In addition to the acquisition of skills and practical knowledge, areas such as studies relating to family relations and human relations are also emphasized. Students learn about the “domain of the heart,” and the curriculum inculcates leadership in the educational field, local community, society, and home.

■Food Science Experiment

1. In addition to textbooks, printout teaching materials are utilized

To suit the changing times, the use of textbooks is supplemented by original printout teaching materials so as to encourage the acquisition of the latest knowledge and information.

2. Training curriculum that cultivates outstanding ability through extensive practice

Students learn not only theoretical knowledge but also skills relating to basic chemistry, clothing, and food. Furthermore, future options will broaden because students can learn matters relating to the whole interior of houses so as to develop draftsmanship skills in this area of study.

3. Study of various mindsets so as to learn an ideal mode of human relations

In order to seek a methodology that will inform and shape social structure so as to create lives of abundance and fulfillment in the present age, the students study family relationships, aging theory, educational psychology, life sciences, anti-discrimination education, and human relations.

Sewing Room

We have the largest and most well-equipped sewing room in Western Japan. This room contains 48 sewing machines recommended by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, 50 computer sewing machines and also a number of industrial sewing machines. In this room we have 100 models of torso that are available for sewing practice and for the graduation sewing project.

Drafting Instruments

Drafting is necessary for the Housing and Architecture class in the field of Housing Environment. We provide whole sets of drafting instruments such as parallel ruler, pitch scale, triangle, and triangle scale for each of the students. Students who wish to become second degree architects (ni kyu kenchikushi) will be able to use these instruments.
